Beyond the Cubicle: Experience a Millennial Couple Getaway in Memphis

Have you played by all the rules to the success game but still feel like something is missing? As much as you may want to be an independent woman or an emotionally detached man, there is something about the interaction with another human being that exposes us to another piece of ourselves that we’ve never even explored before. It’s not until we tap into that connection with like-minded souls that we calm those voices of what we should be doing and take the time to appreciate the people who make each moment more meaningful.

So whether you’ve just started dating or have been married for years, it’s important to do what it takes to get to know your significant other in new ways. And traveling to a new location can be just the spark you need to focus on the beauty of your relationship (there will be no Excel spreadsheets during this trip!).

One of the most important aspects of a good getaway is choosing the best hotel for your needs. Let’s face it: a crappy hotel can spoil the mood so fast that you’d rather be in your boss’ office discussing the 2nd quarter budget (and we all know how intellectually draining those conversations can be).

During a recent couple getaway, my partner and I stopped by the famous home of blues and barbecue bites — the one and only Memphis, Tennessee — and stayed at two iconic hotels: The Peabody Memphis and Big Cypress Lodge. We enjoyed the comfort, convenience, quality, and a chance to stare into each other’s eyes at the highest points of the city.

The Peabody Memphis

As soon as we stepped onto the Peabody soil, we felt the royal appeal of the golden décor and were immediately transported to a mental space reserved for kings and queens — making all of our childhood fantasies of royalty come true.

We walked into the center of the lobby, and found a lavish fountain occupied by the world’s most famous mallard ducks that make their daily appearance for the Peabody Duck March (I felt like an instant celebrity when I was asked to serve as the honorary Duckmaster as hundreds of people from around the world watched from the loft).

One glance in another direction, and you’ll be able to take in a 360-degree view of sights that will make your heart melt — my partner grabbed my hand and we admired the beauty around us.

We strolled past the hotel’s gift shop, filled with themed Memphis treats and adorned with pictures of iconic musicians, before we cruised up the elevator to relax in one of the 464 highly esteemed rooms.

Our smile widened as we were greeted by a team of courteous and helpful staff that were happy to assist in making our hotel stay feel like the fairytale we imagined in our dreams.

As we walked into our hotel room, our eyes were seduced by the beauty and comfort that surrounded us. The room was spacious, cozy, and, of course, royal in its own right. The bed had the perfect balance of softness with a firm base (I was tempted to exercise my freedom by jumping on the Egyptian covered sheets with my partner. Who doesn’t want to feel like a kid again?).

The carpet gently hugged our feet as we perused the reading material and admired the beautiful tapestry. The Peabody pays attention to every detail, even offering a wooden desk to make sure you’re comfortable while you briefly check your emails on your laptop (the keyword is “briefly,” since this is a couple’s weekend getaway — don’t forget).

We arrived at the hotel on Thursday night, so we were able to elevate our love on the top of the Peabody Rooftop. This party has been a tradition for many esteemed presidential and executive guests, so you never know who you’ll meet. The band of the evening, Almost Famous, graced our ears with some original songs, old school, and contemporary beats we danced to all night long. From our view, we saw everything from the beautiful, serene Mississippi River to the historical sites that the world holds close to its heart. We enjoyed the moment with one of the Peabody’s most popular drinks, the Sunset Mo-Tito, which includes a blend of Tito’s, raspberry, pineapple, and mint.

In the morning, we ventured to the hotel’s workout gym to burn off the night’s fun fare eating fest! That’s when our eyes were tempted to take a dip in the luxurious, heated indoor pool.

Our 3-night stay at the Peabody was so cozy that it was hard to divorce ourselves from the bed (blame it on the rejuvenating dual-chamber down pillows). But every moment of relaxation was worth it and prepared us for our next adventure.

Big Cypress Lodge

Words are not enough to describe the visual wonders of the Big Cypress Lodge. Standing tall as one of the newest treasures of Memphis, the hotel layout was something we’ve never witnessed anywhere else in the world.

It was mind-blowing to discover that the space was once used as a concert venue, and is now the newest pyramid-shaped dwelling that every couple seeking a mixture of adventure and relaxation want to experience.

The hotel lodge is home to a town-sized Bass Pro Shops that is bordered by indoor cabin suites, scattered fish-filled rivers, and gigantic water tanks. There is a cypress swamp in the middle, sprinkled with retail shops in every direction. We were so captivated by this place; we felt like we were exploring the great outdoors, but we were actually inside.

The word “bored” will never come near your mouth when you’re surrounded by an aquatic-themed bowling alley, archery range, and fishing activities.

We took the elevator to our room and stood in awe as we passed the nature-themed residence floor. The area was fully furnished with a fireplace, seating area, and wood-carved fixtures. We had to constantly remind ourselves where we were (and just embrace the moment).

The basic rooms were so well-crafted that we felt like we were inside a suite! From the private treehouse balcony attached to our fabulous room to the mountain deer head giving us a piece of nature above our bed, we were fascinated by the design of the whole layout.

Then we took our relationship to the next level (literally, 300 feet above the ground on a freestanding glass elevator) to eat at the hotel’s premier dining spot, The Lookout.

Our eyes were in for a beautiful surprise. The scenery took our breath away as we overlooked an enchanting view of the Mississippi River and watched the sunset.

The Duck Blind Sunrise cocktail was the perfect drink to add to the serene feeling of being on a beach. We watched the delicacies of the sea on our plate as we bit into our delicious BBQ Shrimp appetizer. My heart was even fuller after I tasted the pan-seared salmon and admired my beau’s Filet Mignon. Every tender bite that entered my mouth reminded me of what life could be like when you’re intentional about creating memories with the people who mean the world to you.

As the dark shadows of the night approached us, we went to our room, sat on the balcony, and discussed our vision for the future. The stillness of the scenery and the peacefulness of the moment provided an excellent time for reflection; we felt a sense of understanding and togetherness that we had never felt before. It was wrapped with love and care. It revealed an insatiable desire to experience more of this — to just let go of the worries of the world and create a harmonic synchronicity that allowed us to spread endless love throughout the world. We didn’t know where all of these thoughts and feelings were coming from. But it was evident that your environment can completely reshape the direction of your relationship.

We never could have guessed that a change in scenery in Memphis would have given us more reasons to appreciate the undisclosed pieces of each other, while unexpectedly painting a view of the future that exceeds anything we’ve ever witnessed.
